I'm done

Making this blog has been a one of the most useful thing in my life. It has taught me so much about my flaws in my work habits and that I need to fix my sleep schedule. And that sleep is important.

After making this blog, I have learned a lot more about the importance of sleep and how much it can affect someone's life.

  1.  Whenever we hear about waking up sleepwalkers, we learn that waking up sleepwalkers should never happen since it will end up killing them and to guide them back to their bed. Well, the sleepwalker won't end up dying on you so that is a good thing, but some people might get agitated from suddenly waking up not in their bed. Just remember that if you see someone sleepwalking and see that they're about to do something that could be dangerous, you might wanna wake them up.
  2. Don't you ever have those moments in your dreams that you wake up suddenly, but you're still in your dream? Well, if not, maybe you don't remember? One thing that I didn't mention in the post was that you can in fact TRAIN yourself to lucid dream. That is insane.
  3. Ah, napping. The best thing to do when you're tired. In fact, some companies have sleep rooms where employees can sleep during their break. Make sure that you set an alarm for the time that you need to wake up. If not, then you're like me wanting to sleep around an hour but end up sleeping an extra five.
  4. Sleeping too long? Apparently, sleeping too long might affect your health, so if you're worried, might wanna check with a professional since safety is number one priority. Oh yeah. If you have problems waking up in the morning, just sleep earlier.
  5. Can't sleep? Or can't stay asleep? Then you might have insomnia. Considering that I am only someone on the internet that is not a professional in this domain, you might wanna check with a professional.
Okay people, this is my last blog post. I'm done.

I"m done with this

Insomnia

Insomnia

Hello. This is my sixth blog post. It will be about a subject that involves a sleeping disorder like most of my other posts.  You might've heard the name before, if not, well this could be an interesting read. Welcome to the post dedicated to sleep and today people, it will all be about insomnia.

Okay, just like my other blog posts, I will start out with the definition of the word in the title. Based on the definition of insomnia, it is a sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. By putting it in my own words, insomnia is basically a sleeping problem, that involves the sleeper to be unable to stay asleep or sleep in general.

How many types of Insomnia are there?

Well, there's two types of insomnia: primary insomnia and secondary insomnia.
Primary insomnia means that the person is having sleep problems, but it is not related health conditions or problems. Secondary insomnia means that the person is having sleep problems because of health conditions, pain or the substance that they are taking. Not only that, insomnia is based on how long it lasts and how often that it occurs. Like the types of insomnia, there are two types of long it can last. If it is short-term, than it is an acute insomnia. It lasts around one night to a few weeks. If it lasts a long time, than it is a chronic insomnia. It lasts at least three nights a week for a month or maybe even longer.

Just imagine not being able to sleep at night or waking up in the middle of the night and not be able to go back to sleep. Not only that, it can last more than one night. The crazy part, it is CONSECUTIVE nights. Meaning what? Well, it means that you wont be able to have a good nights sleep during those days. And we all know what happens when someone doesn't have enough sleep. Someone will become more cranky, you can get sick easier and you can get diabetes.
what
Obviously the worst thing from insomnia is diabetes, but being cranky does sound bad.

Imagine not being able to sleep for days and days. Then you start taking medicine to allow you to sleep and they start working. Then boom, they don't work anymore. You start getting agitated and start buying more medicine and you look like that one person in Shoppers Drug Mart with their pajama, bedhead and dark circles in their eyes. Your s/o, (if you don't have one, then your family) starts getting worried about your health and you start throwing a fit when they say that you need help. You get mad at them and you start drinking(more often) and not coming back home. Your s/o files for a divorce and you lose everything you have. You notice how your life has changed because of one simple(major) mistake of not listening and going for help. And to stop all your suffering, you decide to sui- I should stop.

Remember, if you have health problems or problems in general, don't leave them alone. You need to take care of them because you don't know what path you'll take and those one or two choices in your life can ruin everything that you have or could've had.
Even if you're prescribed for sleeping pills for insomnia, they're normally prescribed for a limited time. Avoid over-the-counter sleeping pills for insomnia because they lose effectiveness over time. So, if you're that Shoppers Drug Mart person, you might want to ask your health care provider to prescribe you sleeping pills themselves.

Am I sleeping for too long!?

Ah, sleep. One of the best things to do in the world. Sleeping is very important for your health and relaxing. However, is there something called sleeping too much? Welcome to my fifth blog post which is about the dangers of sleeping too long. I love sleeping, so this hurts me.

Wot
Well, the truth is... You can have too much sleep. Sleeping for too long has been linked with diabetes, heart disease and increased risk of death. Wot. Diabetes, heart disease AND increased risk of death. Oh no. It seems like in the future, I'm going to have diabetes, some sort of heart disease and increased risk of death.

Researchers have shown that depression and low socioeconomic status leads to oversleeping. Well, I do seem depressed lately because I have pain all over my body and I'm always tired even when all I'm doing is sitting down. All  this could be my imagination. When reading this site, it said that if I'm experiencing some of theses symptoms and they are affecting my life, do not hesitate to ask for help because I might be suffering from depression. Well, I have been having these symptoms for awhile and nothing is happening to me besides theses symptoms and my are not really affecting my life besides feeling like garbage after waking up. Even though in the last part, it says: ''Only a doctor can diagnose depression,'' I feel fine if you overlook those symptoms, so I should be fine, right!? I never have been to a doctor for any of these kind of illnesses because I haven't been to a doctor in years and have been fine. So.... no doctor for me.
I don't mean to offend anyone that is actually suffering from depression. My condolences to you.
Not on topic

I feel like I have been rambling about depression too much even though my post is supposed to be about oversleeping.

It depends on what it means to oversleep. It depends on how old you are, activity level, your health and lifestyle habits. So, it means that you only oversleep when you don't actually need that sleep. Wait, what was the point of that. It was in the name. Well, if you need more sleep, than it is not oversleeping. However, it is recommended that adults should sleep between seven and nine hours each night

Diabetes: Studies have shown that sleeping too long or not enough each night can increase the risk of diabetes.
So, does that mean I have double the chance to have diabetes? Some nights I have too little sleep and some sleep I have way too much sleep.

Exercise
Obesity: Apparently, studies have shown that adults who have slept from nine or tens hours of sleep every night were 21% more likely to become obese over a six year period than those who have seven to eight hours of sleep.
When it is summer time, my average sleep time is twelve hours, does that mean I should be obese in a six year period? Well, I have been sleeping for twelve hours each night every year for as long as I can remember. Unless that 21% only applies if that happens every night of the year for six years? If not, than that should not apply to me.

Back pain: So, those who have back pain should have less sleep and exercise more? Well, I like my sleep, but my back hurts. I might try to exercise more and sleep less.

Depression: 15% of the people that oversleep have depression. Oversleeping may make depression worse because regular sleep habits are important to recovering from depression.
I don't think my oversleeping is related to depression.

Death: Studies have shown that people who sleep nine or more hours a night have higher death rates than those who sleep seven to eight hours a night.
I can do it
If I sleep on average for twelve hours a day, does that mean I have an even higher death rate than those who sleep more than nine hours? Or does it not matter? Either way, it seems like I'm part of that group that has a higher death rate. I might need to sleep less. I can actually do that.

Don't exercise before bedtime because it helps you become more awake. You might take longer to sleep which could harm your sleep schedule long term. Don't drink anything with caffeine or alcohol close to bedtime. I think I said in my first or second post that if you drink alcohol before you sleep, you will wake up during the night.

So, to those who are reading this post. If there is even anyone, make sure you plan out your sleep schedule to the appropriate times so you could avoid having too much sleep or too little.

Napping

Feeling tired!? Then, go to sleep. We all know that when we are tired, we go to sleep. However, don't you ever have times where you are tired, but can't since you are busy? Well, if you do, welcome to my fourth blog post which is about napping.

Do this
There are three types of napping which are defined on how and when nap:

Planned napping: Planned napping is when you decide to nap before you are even sleepy. This type of nap is used when someone wants to rest before doing something later, like taking a quick nap before your exam later.

Emergency napping: Emergency napping happens when you are suddenly tired and can't stay awake.
Tired

Habitual napping: Habitual napping is when someone takes a nap at the same time every day. It is basically is the name, ``Habit.``

It is recommended to nap for 20-30 minutes every day.

In the past, sleeping on the job was considered a taboo. But now, many companies are encouraging their employees to nap. Now they are making sense. If they actually looked at their employees, they will see how most of them are tired by seeing how most of them drink coffee. If you are going to work all tired, you won't be happy while doing your work, right!? If you take a POWER nap, all that can go away. A power nap is taking a nap when you did not have enough sleep time. It is designed to be around 10-15 minutes so the sleeper won't get past sleep stage I and II. After sleep stage II, you are now in deep sleep. If you wake up from a deep sleep while napping, you will wake up all groggy and even more sleepy than before. I know this feeling all too well.
''If I don't get my naps, I get cranky and unfocused by the end of a week of short nights'', Wilde says. ''For me, that nap helps bring back my energy level.''

While reading this quote, you can see the words: don't get my naps, cranky, unfocused, end of a week, short nights and bring back my energy level. Based on those words, we can assume that Wilde means that if it is the end of the week and he would only be allowed a short amount of sleep during the night, he will be cranky and unfocused if he did not nap. Napping for him would bring back his energy level because he won't be tired anymore.
If you watched the video, you will understand that napping is amazing.

Napping will improve your productivity, increase your cognitive function, enhanced memory and you'll be less tired. Of course, if you nap for too long, it can actually harm you. If you nap for too long, you might disrupt your sleep schedule. You might be trying to fall asleep longer than you would normally be.

Me

For me, my sleep schedule is already messed up so, and can't get any worse. I have like 3 to 4 hours of sleep during school nights and around 12-15 hours of sleep during the weekends. Of course it is my fault that I don't have enough sleep. However, I take a nap every day I come back from school, but my naps aren't efficient. My naps last way too long and not in the right environment. They last around 3 hours because I wake up every 10 minutes. It is what they call a cat nap.  Also, I'm not even on a bed! I'm sleeping on a office chair.

Of course, for me, napping for too long won't affect me, since I'm always tired whether it be 3 hours of sleep or 15 hours. As long as I'm bored, I can basically sleep in any situation, whether it be in the daylight or when it is loud.
Bruh
Sleeping at the right time will make it easier to wake up in the morning!? Who knew?
The reason people sleep is because they are tired during. So, it makes sense right!? If you sleep at the right time, you will not feel tired later in the day because you slept at the right time.

Even though it may be only ''10'' minutes of sleep, any sleep is important. Make sure that the position that you sleep in is ideal and comfortable. If you ever feel tired and have things to do later, just take a nap. You will find out that you will feel much better than if you did not take a nap.

Inception

Hello. I'm back again with another blog post. This is my third blog post and if you did not read my last post, I said that this post will be about inception/lucid dreaming. If not, well this post will be about inception. I thank those that have read my other posts and have given me some suggestions to help me improve my blog.

Movie
Me
When people think about inception, they think about the movie, Inception which stared Leonardo DiCaprio. Sunday night, he finally won an Oscar and now all the memes about him never winning can now RIP in peace. My last post was before the Oscars and I mentioned him in my post. Coincidence!? Nah. I obviously knew that he would win, so I posted it before. Fortune-teller to be is me.

According to the Internet, the definition of inception would be starting, beginning and in science fiction term, the act of injecting an idea into someone's mind by entering their dream. The latter definition is used in the movie.

The thing is that I haven't watched Inception before. Don't hate. Wait and listen. I still haven't felt that feeling, that joy that someone has when watching a movie for the first time. The feeling of having that ''Wow!'' moment at the end. I'll continue this part after I watch the movie and analyse parts of the movie concerning inception.

Was actually 2:28h long
Well, after watching the movie, I am proud to say that I learned a lot on sleeping. I knew some of the little facts that were given about sleep, but after watching the movie, I have more ideas that I could talk about. If any of you readers are reading this, if you can recommend me some movies related to sleep(not horror), I would actually like to watch them to gather more information.
Forgot to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It seems like the type of movie that makes you want to watch it again, since some parts of the movie could be confusing and that would require you to watch it again.

So, first I'll do a summary of the beginning of the movie. The summary will stop when it the story actually ''starts.'' Don't want to spoil much of the story.

Squad

It started with Cobb(Leonardo DiCaprio) being seen on the beach after being washed away. Then, he is seen with another man whose name is Saito. Truth is that they're were in the dream world all along. After Cobb woke up, him and his team started to run away from Saito's handmen. While Cobb and Arthur were trying to leave in a helicopter, they saw that Saito was in it. After they got dropped off, Saito asked Cobb that he could help with his problem concerning his kids and him being a fugitive. He then accepted the deal and went to recruit his team composed of six members; Cobb(extractor), Adriadne(Architect), Eames(Forger), Arthur(Point Man),Yusuf(Chemist), and Saito(Employer). His deal was that he had to perform an inception on Rober Fischer, the next heir to the multi-billion dollar empire. They basically want to change Fischer's idea/make him think about his choice. And I'll leave you to discover the rest... No major spoilers.

In the movie, there were many mentions of dreaming in a dream. ''They would basically create different stages of when they dream in their dream and to get to back to reality, they would ride a synchronized system of ''kicks.'' The ''kicks'' are things that they've trained to help them wake up from the dream.

It can help
When someone wakes up from a dream, but is still in a dream and they themselves know it is a dream, it is called ''lucid dreaming''. Lucid dreaming means that you're in a dream, but a very realistic dream that sometimes you could hardly tell the difference in environment. While lucid dreaming you can move around, feel pain, etc... Lucid dreaming can actually be beneficial and doesn't pose any harm on the dreamer unless you got some weird dreams that could affect you psychologically.

I've had some cases of lucid dreaming before, but not as crazy as those in Inception.

RIP
One day, when I was sleeping(obviously), I was dreaming about being a race car driver. I was no ordinary race car driver, I was in a game like dream. One that looked familiar to Mario Kart. I started in 6th place during the race and when I was racing, someone threw a banana behind them and I got caught. My tires started to slip around and my kart spun around and I fell off the stage. But then, I was in a different dream. I was jumping on a trampoline by myself and when I was going down, I fell into the ocean and drowned. I can't swim. With the help of drowning, I woke up and I actually remembered my dream. Weird since most people don't remember what dreams they had when they were asleep. However, during the movie, it was said that people don't remember how they got in that specific dream. Makes sense since I don't know how I even got in the kart in the first place.

Well, this concludes my third blog post. Thank you for reading this post about inception/lucid dreaming. I know I said that this post would be about inception, but I found that it would help if I added some parts about lucid dreaming. I hope that this did not bore any of you readers and I hope to entertain you some more.

Sleepwalking

Hello! I'm back again and today, I bring to you, another blog post which is about sleepwalking. Since my last post  was my introduction post, this is my first actual blog post about the subject of sleep. In this post, I will be including statistics about sleepwalking since some readers wanted me to include them.

Dude sleepwalking
The basic definition of sleepwalking would be the act of ''walking'' in your sleep. Meaning that you would get out of your bed and start to wander somewhere. When someone is sleepwalking, basically anything can happen. There have been cases where the sleepwalker has peed on something, to walking around a table and went back to their back right after, got up and started brushing their teeth, ended up hitting someone while in their sleep or maybe even killing someone. When I say anything, I mean ANYTHING. Seriously.

I will tell you, the readers, some of my own personal sleepwalking cases that I found to be very weird.

So, when I was younger, I don't really remember the year, but I was young. I liked to sleep on tables. You guys should try it sometimes. Same for sleeping on the floor. More comfortable than you think. Continuing on, the next day, my mom told me that around 10 pm, I got out of my bed, went downstairs, walked around a table in the middle of the room around six times and went back to my room. Weird.

Them brushing skills
When, I was younger, still don't remember the year, I had another case of sleepwalking. When I was younger I was one of those kids that went to bed at 8 pm and was still tired during school hours. Around an hour later after going to bed, I got up, went to the bathroom and started to brush my teeth while being asleep. Luckily I only started to brush my teeth and not start to pee. That time, I actually woke up by myself, well with the help of me choking on the toothpaste. My first thought after waking up was like, ''huh? What am I doing here?'' Then, I got out of the bathroom, checked the time and saw that it was around 9:30 pm. I was like, ''Oh no, I'm late for school again!''(I was late to school almost every day even though I live really close to the school.) Truth was that it was only around an hour after of when I went to sleep and still the same day.

Around last year, during the march break, my family and I went to Toronto for vacation. For the night, we stayed in a hotel. One night, we ended up going shopping until around 12 am and came home around 1 am. I had to obviously shower because I like to be clean and I sweat, a lot. After my shower I brushed my teeth because that is my daily routine. Since I don't go to the dentist, don't ask me why, I don't know the answer either I ended up going to bed around 2 am. Well, not really on a bed. Since there was not enough beds for everyone, I had to sleep on a sofa. When I woke up, I was on a bed and not on the sofa. It was weird because I haven't had a case of sleepwalking for awhile. So, I asked my mom and she said around 3 am she said that she would switch places with me so I could actually sleep on a bed. Apparently, I said yes and I got up, walked around the second bed, around my brother that was sleeping on the floor and got on the bed. It was really weird since it was the environment was new to me and I keep wondering how I managed to maneuver my way over to the bed, when it was the first night at the hotel. Weird.

This thing is evil
Normally, people would assume that the cause of sleepwalking would be from having nightmares. It could be the reason, but I personally haven't had a case of sleepwalking when I have nightmares that I know of. In fact, I did not have any nightmares on either of those nights, that I could remember. Of course, you would think, ''oh, you obviously a had a nightmare, but you forgot about it.'' Well, when I have a nightmare, I would normally wake up crying(yeah...) and usually my nightmares are about Tetris and blocks. I seriously don't know why I have nightmares on those. My point is, that on those three nights, before I went to bed, I was really tired and maybe I was sleeping in an uncomfortable position. Maybe my head was too high? I normally go to sleep on my right side, so maybe I slept on my left? Who knows? I know I don't. Hah.

According to Wikipedia(great source), they say that sleepwalking could be caused from being sleep deprived, having a fever or being extremely tired. Now that I think back, when I talked about the table story, I was indeed sick. Normally when someone is sick, they should have a fever and be tired, right!? Coincidence? I think not.

Also, sleepwalking could be caused from drinking alcohol before sleeping. Even if alcohol is a sedative, the sleep that the sleeper receives isn't ideal for sleeping. The alcohol would end up increasing the number of times that the sleeper would wake up during the night instead of allowing them to sleep peacefully. If you think about it, people that pass out while drinking normally wake up and end up falling asleep right after. If you have watched a show or movie that took place somewhere in a bar sometime in the story, most of the time there would be someone sleeping on the counter with their drink and would sometimes wake up randomly.

I love me some SpongeBob SquarePants gifs
According to my sources, it is said that the occurrence of sleep walking is decreased when the sleepwalker gets older and that children are normally the ones to sleep walk. Meaning that the older one would get, you would be less likely to end up walking in your sleep and scaring others. But remember, less likely doesn't mean that you will stop having episodes of sleepwalking.  Your eyes are open, it is creepy.

If you can see, not one thing has been mentioned about sleepwalking being caused by having nightmares. Dreaming is basically having thoughts about past events or something that we've seen before. Like I said, I used to sleep on tables, I brush my teeth everyday, and I would normally sleep on a bed instead of a sofa. All these three are ''past'' events but also things that can happen to me in the present and even the future. What I'm saying is that I never had a nightmare while sleepwalking. However, there have been cases that people had a nightmare while they were sleeping and tragic things happened.

This is a story about a man named Brian Thomas who admitted to killing his wife while sleepwalking because he had a nightmare of fighting an intruder.
Brian Thomas, age 59 and his wife Christine, age 57 were on a holiday in West Wales when he attacked his wife in the middle of the night. They were both asleep in their van when they were in a car park but were disturbed by young boys. So, they decided to go back home. While sleeping, he had a nightmare about the young boys breaking into their van. The next morning, Mr. Thomas woke up beside his wife's body and dialed 999. He told the emergency operator that he thinks that he killed his wife thinking that it was an intruder that he was fighting back. However, the breaking in of the young boys was all a dream and what he had done was reality. Mr. Thomas admits that he caused the death of his wife, but he isn't guilty to murder or manslaughter since he had suffered from sleeping disorders for 50 years.

Sad
I never finished reading the rest of the story because it requires me to sign up for an account for Times of London and I don't want to sign up since it gives me spam mail. After reading this story, I felt sad for Brian Thomas. They've been married for 40 years and they went on a holiday for their anniversary, to find out he next morning, he killed his own wife. I can't even comprehend how he can live with the fact that his wife died by his OWN hands and that he had no control over it. Honestly, I find Brian Thomas to be a good man, despite killing his wife. Well, he had no control over it soooo... Even though he killed his wife, he instantly called the emergency number and admitted that he was guilty. Many people would end up trying to run away and hide the evidence. You can tell that he really loved his wife, that she meant the world to him because he didn't even care what would happen to him if he called the police and the future that could've awaited him. He shouldn't feel guilty because there was nothing that could've been done. Sad story indeed.

I forgot to mention something else. If you wake up a sleepwalker, they won't die from the shock. They might become disorientated and wonder why and how they're not in their bed. You don't really need to forcefully wake a sleepwalker unless you really need to. If they're only wandering, you can simply guide them over to their bed and lie them down. However, there are some people that get really violent while sleepwalking. So, watch out and stay safe!

Statistic

Thank you for reading this blog post and I hope you'll stay for the remaining posts and next time, it the subject will be about inception. So stay tuned if you want to hear my thoughts about the movie and about inception itself. Never watched it, so I hope it is good as many say it is.

Sleep

Hello! And this is my blog that I will be updating around ten times throughout the year and I will be discussing the importance of sleep, how it could affect your lives, problems related to sleep and many other things.

Group of  Sperm Whales sleeping vertically

First off, sleep is something that should occur with anything that has a brain. Sleep is something that happens when the creature would go into a state of rest when it has been relaxed enough whether it is deep sleep or not. The act of sleeping would differentiate depending on the species because we humans wouldn't sleep the same way a whale would sleep. Since a whale would normally be underwater, they would need to either be in an idle position, horizontally or vertically or they can end up being asleep and swimming slowly at the same time, meaning they would be what one would say, being ''half asleep''. That is pretty cool considering they're sleeping AND swimming at the SAME time, while watching their surroundings. Crazy, right!?

How one should look while sleeping
We all know that sleep is essential so we can function in our everyday life. Without sleep, we would become very fatigued/tired, depending on how long we've been awake from the last time we've been rested. Additionally, with the lack of sleep, we'll become less focused and will have the desire of wanting to sleep, which would lead to oversleeping. I would know this because I'm someone that always forgets how to do things that I've learned before very frequently and very easily, meaning the days before an evaluation, I would need to relearn everything from scratch. So, I would end up needing to sacrifice some of my already limited resting time. Therefor, I know first-hand how it feels to not have enough sleep and how it can impact ones life. While I was doing my evaluations, I always had the desire to sleep, which would lead to oversleeping and when I got home, I would always sleep more than I would normally(which is about 15 hours). I know, not healthy. But it feels so nice after waking up after a long sleep.

Well, since this is my introductory post, I will not really go in depth with my current post and will save that for later. Since sleep can't really be defined in ''my'' own opinion, I decided that I would split my posts into two parts. The first being that it will be about certain topics of sleep itself and the second being what I think of it and maybe including my personal point of view of the idea.

I would like to inform you, the readers, that this blog will be based on my opinions, with the help of facts to help you the readers, know more on the subject of sleep. I chose the topic of sleep because I found it interesting and it is a subject that impacts the every day life and could maybe change your sleep schedule to something more appropriate/healthy.

Since this is a blog, I would appreciate that you would express your own opinion in the comment section below to give me your feedback, and I hope that you will also enjoy my posts to come.  Have a great day!
